Chuo University was founded as Igirisu Horitsu Gakko (the English Law School) in 1885 and has since carried on a strong tradition of providing practical education based on British empiricism and rationalism, as well as maintaining the founding spirit of nurturing human resources in a dynamic and supportive environment.
The practical education offered at Chuo University focuses on more than just acquiring knowledge that is useful in society. Chuo is committed to education that addresses, sincerely and seriously, the major issues that affect all humankind and to nurturing the abilities needed to make a better society.
To be more specific, our aim is to bring together the knowledge and wisdom of humankind from various fields, ranging from traditional academic fields, such as philosophy, arts, and literature, to highly specialized, state-of-the-art academic fields, and to respond to the demands of modern society.
In order to realize this practical education, Chuo University's six faculties and their respective graduate schools, as well as our three professional graduate schools (the Chuo Graduate School of International Accounting, the Chuo Business School, and the Chuo Law School), promote research and study in a broad range of academic fields. Furthermore, through the Faculty Linkage Program, which links and spans diverse areas of study, the University carries on its endeavors to help students acquire a broad spectrum of knowledge and cultivate critical thinking and problem-solving capabilities.
Our wish to nurture human resources in a dynamic and supportive atmosphere is realized in the learning environment we provide for our students and is not limited to classrooms. Our campuses are attractive, comfortable places of learning where diverse students with different objectives and ways of thinking come together, as are our internship programs and extracurricular activities that put students in contact with wider society. At Chuo University learning has always been supported by students and University personnel, as well as by a large number of alumni worldwide and the parents of current students. Indeed, all of these various members of the Chuo Community have built a system that supports learning in countless ways. And it is this commitment and support that personifies one of the traditions we continue to preserve and cherish.
In 2010, Chuo University commemorated its 125th anniversary. On this occasion we confirmed our commitment to preserving our long and valuable traditions and our sincere and earnest efforts to being a beacon that lights the way forward in the new century.
