Introduction

Hosei University was born in the year 1880 as "Tokyo Hogakusha (Tokyo School of Law)". The university was founded as individual freedom movements aimed at increasing personal freedom and the advancement of society continued to grow taking advantage of the "progressive atmosphere" to take part in the application of law and with the purpose of cultivating high level law professionals who would help to "open up" society. 130 years later it has grown into a comprehensive university with 15 undergraduate faculties, 14 graduate schools and 3 professional schools. This enterprising spirit of "opening up" society through the establishment of the school, has, of course, not changed, and continues to be adhered to today. At present, the university's mission is still to cultivate individuals who have the spirit to actively work towards the advancement of society, or "independent and autonomous personnel". In order that each and every student can build a career form that suits them, we provide full and thorough backing for the process which as a result provides the students with self-sustaining leadership skills and allows the university to produce personnel who will contribute to the advancement of society, this is our school's educational philosophy and objective.

The points upon which the university focuses today in order to realize this philosophy and objective are as follows.
  1. To put into practice education which has the capacity to cross boundaries and deal with learning topics which do not fit into existing frameworks through refined education techniques required by increasingly-complex, modern problems.
  2. To fully implement education practices which improve career design abilities against the background of the university education world which is continually under pressure to quickly deal with business, work and life planning issues to suit the continuing diversification of society.
  3. To enhance education back by strong mutual trust relationships between staff and students through Faculty Development.
  4. To realize a high level of education effectiveness through planning for the thoroughness of education environments and content using the unlimited advancement potential of information technologies.
  5. To foster the ability to respond to in increasing globalization and ensure the thoroughness of education programs for the cultivation of personnel who can independently act in a global society.
  6. To strengthen ties with graduates and improve higher education functions which are suitable for a high level of continuing education and a lifelong learning society.
